RAF Shawbury Celebrates 75 Years of Air Operations Training with Parade at National Memorial Arboretum

RAF Shawbury has marked a major milestone, celebrating 75 years of continuous military air operations training in Shropshire with a ceremonial parade held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Established in 1950, RAF Shawbury has played a crucial role in training generations of air operations personnel. On Friday, 11 July, the occasion was formally recognised with a parade featuring 115 personnel from the Defence College of Air and Space Operations (DCASO), the modern institution at the heart of RAF Shawbury’s training legacy.

Wing Commander Mark Paxman served as Parade Commander, with musical support provided by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force. The salute was taken by Air Vice-Marshal Jason Appleton, Air Officer Commanding No. 2 Group.

Honouring the Past, Training for the Future

Speaking on the occasion, Group Captain Mike Jordan, Commandant of DCASO, reflected on the significance of the anniversary:

“It is my huge privilege to be Commandant of the Defence College of Air and Space Operations, but holding the reins of the college during this 75th year of Air and Space Ops training excellence at RAF Shawbury is a special honour.

Having served at Shawbury in various capacities since 1999, I have witnessed first-hand the development of the College from its roots in the Central Air Traffic Control School, School of Aerospace Battle Management, and School of Air Operations Control.

Marking this impressive milestone alongside past, present, and potentially future, members of the College, as well as veterans and friends, is visible recognition of the sustained commitment and professionalism of so many individuals over such a long period.”

Group Captain Jordan praised the dedication of the college’s trainers and support staff, noting their “collegiate, innovative and expert” approach to instruction, which continues to develop the next generation of air and space operations professionals.

Adapting to a Changing Global Environment

The celebration comes at a time when the global security landscape is becoming increasingly complex. In this context, RAF Shawbury’s role in preparing skilled air operations personnel remains more vital than ever.

“A changing global environment, marked by volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity is placing growing demands on UK Defence and its people,” said Group Captain Jordan. “But I have no doubt that the DCASO will continue to play a critical role in training outstanding warfighters and leaders in air and space operations.”

The Defence College of Air and Space Operations continues to be a cornerstone of the Royal Air Force’s training capability, ensuring readiness not only for His Majesty’s Armed Forces but also for the UK’s global partners and allies.
